Signature Bridges -
Missouri River Pedestrian Bridge
Omaha,
Nebraska to Council Bluffs, Iowa
(2006 Design
Competition)
|
Designing an iconic structure within a set budget was the assignment for
the design/build competition for this new pedestrian bridge connecting
the cities of Omaha, Nebraska and Council Bluffs, Iowa. The illumination
of the rounded shape of the arch was intended to be visible to
pedestrians on the bridge and viewers of the bridge from elsewhere in
the area. The articulated underside of the bridge was washed with light
to create reflections in the water and to provide light at the river
overlooks located under the bridge.

The original
design for this pedestrian bridge was to be an image-making landmark for
this metropolitan area. A unique, S-curved walkway across the Missouri
River connected waterfront activities, walking trail networks, and
public
gathering areas on both sides of the river. The aesthetic and
pedestrian lighting was designed to support the joining of the two sides
of the river. The twin, canted pylons of the bridge were to be
illuminated with either white or colored light, depending on the wishes
of the bridge operating authority.
Faith Baum designed this project
during
her tenure with the Mintz Lighting Group.
