As they prepared for the rehabilitation work that needed to be done on
these two historic bridges in downtown Wilmington, Delaware Department
of Transportation officials recognized that the Market and Walnut Street
Bridges were the decorative bookends for their downtown Riverwalk
development. With this in mind, they expanded their scope of work to
include aesthetic improvements and decorative lighting of the structures
and the pedestrian walkways. New railings incorporate luminous
medallions and the tenders’ houses are washed with light. Floodlighting
of the superstructure emphasizes the graceful form of the bridges. |
