For this bridge over the Sakakawea Reservoir on a reservation in
northern North Dakota, several lighting concepts were presented to a
workshop attended by representatives from the Three Affiliated Tribes
and state and federal transportation officials. These designs included
one that reflected the proximity of the bridge to a reservation casino,
and one that respected the cultural and environmental purity of the
site. The stakeholders selected the lighting design that reflected what
was most important to them: the lighting of the tribal symbols which are
integrated into the design of the bridge itself. In addition to the
aesthetic signature lighting, collaboration with the design team
resulted in the selection of a roadway luminaire that integrated tribal
shapes and symbols.
